Norman C. Metz

Norman C. Metz October 28, 1998 Norman C. Metz, 50, electrical engineer and senior vice president at DeVry Inc., died Sunday of cancer at Vencor Lakeshore Hospital, Chicago. Mr. Metz, of Northbrook, was a non-smoker who struggled with lung cancer since 1995. He was a practical man who was a consummate professional, continuing to travel for his job while he was being treated for cancer. His practicality continued even after his death, said his wife, Bonnie S. Rucks. Mr. Metz was cremated to adhere to his wishes not to spend too much money on funeral expenses. "He'd want me to do things prudently and efficiently," Rucks said. The couple often spent time with their 5-year-old daughter, Alexa Beverly Metz Rucks, in Wisconsin. Since 1983, Metz was a leader in DeVry Inc., an educational institution focusing on business and technology. But his career spanned many companies, including Coco-Cola Foods in Houston, Procter & Gamble Co.'s Package Soap and Detergent Division in Cincinnati and Bell Telephone Laboratories in North Andover, Mass. Survivors also include four brothers, Barney Metz, Gary Beversdorf, Dean Metz and Wayne Metz; and three sisters, Pamela McOuat, Lynn Brillantes and Susan Lundquist. A memorial service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Northbrook Hilton, 2855 N. Milwaukee Ave.
