Richard Shimek Richard Franklin Shimek Engineer, Photographer, Loving Husband, Richard Franklin Shimek, 61, died on January 21, 2010 at Stanford Hospital from a pulmonary hemorrhage. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Unitarian Church of San Jose, 160 North 3rd Street, San Jose, Ca. on 2/21/2010 from 3-5 p.m. Mr. Shimek was born May 19, 1948 in San Mateo, CA to Jack Shimek and Pearl Robards. He grew up in Redwood City and attended Sequoia High School, then earned a BA in geology from San Jose State as well as IT training and a bioinformatics certification. He spent his early career working as a technician at the U.S. Geological Survey, and then joined the semiconductor and disk drive industries as a process engineer working at AMD, Read-Rite and other companies. He held two patents for alumina material used with thin film heads produced at Read-Rite. He and his wife Shannon Marquardt of 30 years made their home in San Jose. His wife wrote: "Richard was a photographer, sailor, gardener, hiker and movie goer." Mr. Shimek is survived by his wife, Shannon, brother, Steve Shimek and three step siblings, Myrna Peterson, Steve Schingler and Barbara Schingler.
